Russ Mitchell Back Home After Surgery For Broken Ankle

CBS’s Russ Mitchell is now resting at home, after surgery Tuesday on a broken ankle at Manhattan’s New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

“I feel fine,” Mitchell tells TVNewser via email. “It smarts…but my family is taking great care of me.” Mitchell broke his ankle in three places after he “slipped on a patch of ice” on his driveway.

“Wish I had a more manly story!” he jokes.

For now, Mitchell is able to get around on crutches. “[A]nd I got the hang of them pretty quickly,” he says, adding that he’s “not doing a lot of walking on the streets of New York, but I’m able to get from Point A to Point B in my house with relatively little drama.”

After the injury forced Mitchell to cancel reporting shoots in Los Angeles and Washington, DC this week, he’s aiming to return to anchoring the CBS Evening News‘ Sunday edition on February 14. Mitchell then hopes “to be back on the road shortly after that.”
