Robert Redford: ‘Really Tricky Acting Job’ to Play Dan Rather

By Mark Joyella

In an interview with Katie Couric, Robert Redford said he was drawn to playing former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather in the film Truth because, “Dan didn’t have his day in court.”

When he read the script for Truth, Redford said the film would be an opportunity to tell the whole story about a botched 2004 60 Minutes II report about George W. Bush‘s military service. It meant playing a fascinating character, but not an easy one.

“People saw him nightly, and they know what he looks like, and I’m going to have to find the essence of this guy, but I can’t do a caricature,” said Redford, who was an Evening News viewer. “It’s going to be a really tricky acting job.”

After Rather left the CBS Evening News in 2005, Bob Schieffer anchored the broadcast until Couric took over in Aug., 2006.
