Rio Olympics Unveil Logo to Worldwide Silence

Oh look, a major announcement about another event was poorly timed.

On Friday night, Rio de Janerio’s Olympic Committee unveiled the logo for the 2016 Olympics. The only problem? No one was paying attention. You know, because it was New Years Eve and all.

There were one million people on the Copacabana beach who watched on a television screen, but if you weren’t there, there’s little chance you knew about the debut. Even if you were there, what are the chance you were paying attention?

Still, the logo is a success, according to at least one person (who has a decidedly vested interest).

Over 140 design firms submitted ideas and eight made the final cut. The winner: Rio firm Tatil.

“The logo for Rio’s 2016 Games conveys passion and transformation. The passion of all Cariocas and Brazilians for sport and celebration,” Carlos Nuzman, president of the Rio Olympic organizing committee, said. “Carioca” being a nickname for Rio’s citizens. “And the transformation that the Games are already bringing to Rio and to Brazil.”

We can only hope the actual games are better planned than the logo unveiling.
