Rachel Maddow & Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell Awarded the Walter Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow was among the recipients of the Walter Cronkite Faith and Freedom Award from the Interfaith Alliance. Maddow was honored for her “passionate coverage of the intersection of religion and politics.” Maddow spoke of faith, politics, and challenging extremism at the event on Sunday.

Past honorees include Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, George Clooney, Judy Shepard and Larry King.

The award ceremony had several famous guests in attendance: Mr. Cronkite’s son, Chip Cronkite and his wife, the actress Deborah Rush, MSNBC President Phil Griffin, and Bill Wolff, the executive producer of “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

New York, NY – Rachel Maddow and the Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell received the Walter Cronkite Faith and Freedom Award from Interfaith Alliance President Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy at an award ceremony in New York City on Sunday evening. Maddow and Campbell both spoke about the misuse of religion in public life for political gain, and the need for people of faith to come together to challenge extremism.

Among the many guests in attendance at the event were Mr. Cronkite’s son, Chip Cronkite and his wife, actress Deborah Rush, MSNBC President Phil Griffin, the executive producer of The Rachel Maddow Show, Bill Wolff, philanthropist Mitchell Gold and former member of Congress, Rep. Amo Houghton (R-NY).

Until his passing in 2009, Walter Cronkite served as the honorary chair of Interfaith Alliance. Maddow and Campbell join a long list of past honorees that includes Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, George Clooney, Bill and Judith Moyers, Judy Shepard and Larry King.
