Rachel Maddow Announces Her Next Book

By A.J. Katz

In addition to her critically-acclaimed podcast Bag Man, and 9 p.m. cable news show, Rachel Maddow has been working on another book that’s now ready for pre-order: Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, And the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth.

Maddow’s latest, which she announced on last night’s show will be coming out in October, is described as a “dark, serpentine, riveting tour of the unimaginably lucrative and corrupt oil-and-gas industry.” It is a call to “stop subsidizing the wealthiest industry on earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of predatory oil executives and their enablers.”

“Cheery, right?” Maddow quipped. “I have just written a book about the oil and gas industry and the consequences of that industry, which I think are a much bigger deal than we have generally appreciated, both here at home and around the world.”

This is Maddow’s second significant book after the 2012 tome, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, which the late Roger Ailes, of all people, wrote a blurb for:“People who like Rachel will love the book. People who don’t will get angry, but aggressive debate is good for America. Drift is a book worth reading,” Ailes wrote.

“After I finished Drift, I publicly and privately swore that I would never, ever write another book,” Maddow said, while laughing. “Honestly, it almost killed me writing that book. I have this whole other job. It takes a ton of mental space to write a book. I said I would never do it again and I meant it quite earnestly.”

She added: “But I lied.”
