Public Editor Says Alessandra Stanley Was “Gratuitously Nasty” To Katie Couric

In public editor Daniel Okrent’s Sunday NYT column, he quotes Alessandra Stanley’s April 25 attack on Katie Couric: “At the first sound of her peremptory voice and clickety stiletto heels, people dart behind doors and douse the lights.” And he concludes that the comment, and others like it by other writers, were “gratuitously nasty, and inappropriate in a newspaper that many of us look to as a guardian of civil discussion.”
