Pope Names Former Fox News Correspondent Greg Burke Chief Vatican Spokesman

Pope Francis on Monday named former Fox News Channel correspondent Greg Burke as head of the Vatican press office. Burke replaces Fr. Federico Lombardi, who is retiring after 10 years as the Vatican’s chief spokesman.

According to The National Catholic Reporter, Spanish journalist Paloma Garcia Ovejero has been named Burke’s replacement as vice director, making her the first woman to hold that position.

Burke, who reported from Rome for Fox News, joined the Vatican’s communications staff in 2012 as a senior advisor. He was promoted to vice director in December, a promotion that insiders described as making Burke “heir apparent” to Father Lombardi.
