Politics Aside, 2 Stories From Syria Tonight on CBS

WilliamsPalmerWhile much of the news media’s attention today is focused on the race for the White House–specifically the GOP, specifically Donald J. Trump–the CBS Evening News will have two reports from inside Syria tonight.

“Syria occasionally comes up in this presidential election season, but what is happening there demands the world’s attention,” CBS Evening News ep Steve Capus tells TVNewser.

Holly Williams reports from Northern Syria with the U.S. backed rebel forces, while Elizabeth Palmer continues her reporting from Aleppo, traveling with Syrian government troops.

“Liz’s team has filed compelling reports from inside Syria for nearly two weeks,” Capus said.

Last week, Palmer got unprecedented access into some of the towns and villages leveled by the fighting that broke out 5 years ago this month. Only recently has the Syrian army won back the territory from rebels. Palmer was one of the first Western reporters allowed access there since the army regained control.

“CBS News’ commitment to international coverage is second to none,” said Capus, who is also executive editor of CBS News. “We’re proud to showcase the reporting of two of the world’s very best foreign correspondents.”
