Philly Columnist: Boston Fans Have Become Obnoxious

By Cam Martin

In a column that’s startling in its lack of self-awareness, John Gonzalez of The Philadelphia Inquirer says Phillies fans should brace themselves for the arrival of obnoxious visiting sports fans when the Red Sox visit Philadelphia for a three-game set on Tuesday. Boston fans, you see, have become smug and self-satisfied in light of the championships won by the Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox and, most recently, the Bruins.

They’ve gotten out of control, these Boston fans. They’ve mutated. There was a time when they took a perverse pride in their suffering, when they romanticized their lack of sports luck. Then the Pats won and the Sox won and the Celtics won and, more recently, the Bruins won. Whatever humility Bostonians had was long ago traded for some of those giant “We’re No. 1” foam fingers and a slew of omnipresent smug smiles.

The people in Boston have become obnoxious, arrogant, condescending. And those are just my friends up there. The rest are worse, an openly supercilious lot who never hesitate to tell you exactly how good they have it. Pride, as Marsellus Wallace said, will mess with you.

What Gonzalez fails to point out is that Philadelphia fans are essentially the same, albeit with far fewer recent titles in the four major sports. Specifically, one from the Phillies in 2008. But hey, ya might as well appeal to the lowest common denominator and try to paint one fan base as acting in a way that others wouldn’t if presented with the same set of circumstances. No doubt Philly fans would be humble and deferential in sports-talk discussions if the Flyers, Sixers or Eagles could win a title or two every few decades.
