Last night’s Orange Bowl earned a 7.1 overnight rating, the third highest for college football in ESPN’s history, according to Nielsen.

Ratings were down only one percent (7.2) compared to last year’s game between Iowa and Georgia Tech on Fox and a 20 percent increase from 2009’s contest (5.9) featuring Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.

Locally, Richmond-Petersburg (16.7), Birmingham (15.6), Norfolk (15.6) and Columbus (13.6) led the way in overnight ratings.
