October Ratings: CNN Remains a Top 10 Basic Cable Network

By A.J. Katz

CNN is a top 10 basic cable network in total day viewers for the third consecutive month, finishing No. 6 across the basic cable landscape during October 2017.

Additionally, the network has defeated MSNBC in total day for 40 straight months among adults 25-54, and continues to lead on weekends in the aforementioned ad-friendly demo.

That said, CNN saw softness in October during the crucial prime time daypart, where TV networks set premium ad rates. CNN finished behind Fox News and MSNBC both in total viewers and in the prime time demo, but still managed to earn a No. 8 ranking across basic cable in weekday prime time viewers.

As one might have expected, CNN posted double-digit prime time audience declines this month versus the previous October, an election coverage-heavy month (-52 percent in total viewers and -54 percent in the demo). But FNC and MSNBC posted year-over-year declines as well.

CNN had finished No. 1 in cable news among the younger news demos, including adults 25-54, in October 2016. That was CNN’s first monthly win in the news demo since 2001.

The ratings for October, 2017 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Prime time (Mon-Sun): 919,000 total viewers / 325,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun):  723,000 total viewers / 239,000 A25-54

On the programming front, CNN’s New Day scored a key win over Morning Joe in the key demo. This is the program’s second straight monthly win over MJ among younger news viewers.

Erin Burnett defeated MSNBC in the A25-54 demo at 7 p.m., while Anderson Cooper defeated MSNBC in the demo at 8 p.m.

CNN has a strong story on weekends. Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown is No. 1 among adults 25-54 in its time period, out-performing Fox News and MSNBC combined, and This is Life With Lisa Ling is tracking at its strongest season ever in total viewers. The Wonder List With Bill Weir, in its third and final season, is presently No. 2 in its Saturday 9 p.m. slot among adults 25-54.
