Nowhere To Go But Up

You’ve gotta hand it to Bob Schieffer, Jim Murphy and the CBS P.R. team: They know how to earn some press coverage. “‘CBS Evening News’ showing signs of life,” the AP says. “CBS finds its ‘News’ is all good,” Variety says. “‘CBS Evening News’ Gains Ground,” TV Week says. The headlines are true, but only because the evening news ratings for CBS dropped in 2002, 2003, and 2004, as this comparison of November sweeps data demonstrates:

Nov. 2002: NBC: 10,746,000 / ABC: 10,551,000 / CBS: 8,845,000

Nov. 2003: NBC: 10,902,000 / ABC: 10,130,000 / CBS: 8,262,000

Nov. 2004: NBC: 11,418,000 / ABC: 9,914,000 / CBS: 7,755,000

Nov. 2005: NBC: 10,444,000 / ABC: 8,982,000 / CBS: 7,950,000
