November Ratings: CNN #1 in Total Day Demo

For the first time in seven years, CNN is the #1 cable news network among key viewers — the A25-54 demo. With an average of 370,000 viewers CNN has broken Fox News’ seven-year win streak in the demo for total day viewing. FNC averaged 356,000 and MSNBC averaged 291,000.

The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer had its best month ever coming in first place in the demo for all three hours (4, 5 & 6pmET).

CNN is the #1 cable news network among 25-54 viewers in total day for the month of November — breaking Fox News’ streak for the first time in seven years, since 2001. In 2008 CNN’s primetime ratings are the highest in a decade (chart attached).

The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer won all three hours in November, 4p, 5p and 6p among P25-54. At 4 p.m., The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer averaged 402,000 demo viewers, 20% ahead of Fox News’ Your World average of 336,000 and 91% more than MSNBC Live’s 210,000. At 5 p.m., The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer averaged 418,000 demo viewers, a 24% advantage over Fox News Election Headquarters’ 338,000 and a 32% lead over MSNBC Hardball’s 317,000. At 6 p.m., The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer averaged 508,000 demo viewers, 4% ahead of Fox News Special Report with Brit Hume’s 487,000 and 67% ahead of MSNBC’s Race to the White House which posted 305,000. This is the first time in the program’s history to win all three hours of the program in one month. The 4p and 5p hours have had several previous monthly wins.

Anderson Cooper 360 is the #1 show at 10p among 25-54 viewers in November with 688k demo viewers, 5% ahead of FNC On The Record’s 656,000 and a 49% lead over MSNBC’s Countdown replay, averaging just 462k.

November Ratings Highlights:

CNN Heroes was the most-watched program on cable news on Thanksgiving Night, with 1.034 million total viewers tuning in from 9-11:04 p.m. compared to 894k on FNC and 631k from MSNBC.

CNN was the #1 network on television on Election Night from 8-12:30 p.m., topping all broadcast and cable news networks including ABC, NBC, CBS, FNC, and MSNBC.

The CNN Digital Network ranked #1 in Unique Visitors on Election Day ’08 with 12.8 million. The CNN.com homepage also ranked #1 among online news site homepages, with 8.3 million uniques. CNN.com generated 283 million page views on Election Day 2008 – representing a 271% increase over the benchmark – marking the highest day for page views on CNN.com since tracking began.

Election Day 2008 also marked a milestone for CNN.com Live, as it served 5.3 million live streams, nearly tripling its previous daily streaming record of 1.8 million streams, which was set on Sept. 1 – the first day of the Republican National Convention and the day Hurricane Gustav made landfall.
