Nightly News Expands to An Hour; Dawn ’til (Past) Dusk for David Muir

By Chris Ariens

It’s no summer Friday for the network newsers.

“NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” will expand to one hour to cover the busy day of breaking news capped by the shooting death of one of two New York prison escapees. Richard Matt was shot and killed this afternoon in Malone, NY about 40 miles from the prison. The location of the second escapee, David Sweat is not known. Stephanie Gosk and John Yang are in upstate New York.

Holt was in Charleston, SC this morning for the Today show, covering today’s funeral for Rev. Clemente Pinckney, murdered last week in his church. Holt returned to New York following the Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states. Ron Allen is reporting from Charleston while Pete Williams will report from the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Kelly Cobiella is in Tunis, Tunisia reporting on the massacre at a Mediterranean resort today.

Over on ABC, David Muir will finish off a long week, which included anchoring Good Morning America and World News Tonight, by anchoring a new 20/20.

Muir anchored breaking news updates on the terror attacks during GMA. Later in the morning, he anchored two special reports on the Supreme Court ruling, and two more special reports this afternoon, one on President Obama’s eulogy at Rev. Pinckney’s funeral and the other on the Richard Matt shooting.
