NBCU Shutters Two Websites

TWOPdailycandyYou’ve surely heard of them, maybe you’ve visited them from time to time, but the days of Daily Candy and Television Without Pity are numbered. NBCUniversal Digital is shuttering the sites.

Comcast acquired Daily Candy for $125 million in 2008. Following Comcast’s acquisition of NBCU in 2010, Daily Candy became part of the NBCU Digital Network. Launched in 2000 by journalist/entrepreneur Dany Levy, Daily Candy was a pioneer in online newsletters geared toward women and featuring fashion, food, and entertainment.

TelvisionWithoutPity, meant for TV junkies, provides witty, usually mocking, episode recaps about television’s most popular shows. The site was acquired by NBCU’s Bravo in 2007. It will cease operations April 4 with forums remaining open until May 31.

Kara Swisher at Re/Code — in which the NBC News Group is a major investor —  reports 64 employees at Daily Candy and three at TWop will lose their jobs. “Apparently, many of those staffers — largely located in New York — might be offered jobs at other NBCU properties, but that is not a certainty,” Swisher writes.
