NBCU CEO Says Cable ‘Tougher Business to Grow’

By Mark Joyella

On Comcast’s fourth-quarter earnings call Tuesday, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said NBCU’s cable networks division earnings dropped 5.6 percent.

While NBCUniversal — which includes the NBC TV network, as well as cable channels MSNBC, CNBC and others — had an overall revenue increase of 2.3 percent, Burke conceded there has been significant viewership declines for the company’s cable properties. Today’s ratings release for February bears that out. It showed MSNBC lost nearly half its primetime audience in February. From The Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Burke said the cable networks are “still a good business” but “it is going to be a tougher business to grow” in the coming years. Still, he said he remains optimistic about “tremendous growth potential” at NBCU in the future.
