The ‘Today’ Show Has a Super Bowl Ad

By Brian Flood

The “Today” show anchor team shot their first-ever Super Bowl advertisement this week. The commercial was shot on the streets of midtown Manhattan and includes Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Carson Daly, Hoda Kotb, Willie Geist and Tamron Hall.

Adweek has a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the spot.

The commercial, directed by Mat Whitecross, was modeled after Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars” music video, and the song is played in the “Today” show ad as well. Whitecross has directed many of Coldplay’s music videos.

Kathie Lee Gifford was on vacation and missed the shoot, but an NBC insider tells us she’ll be represented in some capacity during the ad.

According to Forbes, a 30-second spot during last season’s Super Bowl cost $4 million, but NBC’s “Today” show probably doesn’t have to worry about the cost. The ad will air during the Super Bowl XLIX on February 1 at 6:30 pm ET on, obviously, NBC.
