NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel is to be honored with the 2022 John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for his achievement in and contributions to the field of broadcast journalism.

Engel, along with PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff, will be recognized at the RDNA22 awards ceremony and reception on Sept. 15 in Indianapolis.

RTDNA President and CEO Dan Shelley said, “Richard Engel is on the front lines of history and helps to humanize the most important events in the world.” He added, “His work sets an important standard for journalism—and viewers around the world are better for it.”

“Richard Engel regularly puts himself in harm’s way to show the world the dangerous reality of conflict zones,” said RTDNA Nominating Committee Chair Andrea Stahlman. “His courage and dedication are an inspiration to every journalist who seeks to report the truth, no matter how difficult it can be at times.”

The John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award is named after the RTDNA founder and its first president. The Award recognizes an individual’s contributions to the journalism profession and freedom of the press.

Engel is no stranger to receiving awards from RTDNA. Last year, On Assignment with Richard Engel, which has aired on MSNBC in weekend primetime, received the Murrow Award in the News Documentary category for the hour-long special, The Covid Frontlines.

This year, Engel and his show team also received awards from the NY Press Club for Documentary National TV & Feature Reporting National TV; the Deadline Club for National TV Spot News Reporting—and was a Gold winner at the Telly Awards for their Afghanistan: Graveyard of the Empires report.
