NBC News Digital announced Friday that senior politics editor Liz Johnstone has been promoted to the role of managing editor for politics.
Executive editor Tom Namako, svp of global digital news Catherine Kim and global newsgathering evp David Verdi announced the news in a memo to staff.
“Liz has been with the politics team from the start, covering two presidential elections for NBC News, and took the helm in February of 2021,” the trio write in a memo. “Since then the section has grown in size and ambition, with our team competing on the biggest politics stories of the moment. She is driving the team to be urgent, to break news and to publish journalism that makes NBC News Digital stand out.”
Johnstone has been overseeing NBC’s entire digital politics team since Feb. 2021, taking over for assistant managing editor of politics, Gregg Birnbaum, who left the company at that time.
Not only was Johnstone officially promoted today, but so was Henry J. Gomez, who now has the title of senior national political reporter.
“Henry joined the politics team just over a year ago and immediately established himself as a beat leader on critical midterm contests throughout the Midwest, including his beloved home base of Ohio,” Johnstone and Namako write in a separate note. “His in-depth reporting on that Senate primary, along with the contests in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, has raised the profile of NBC News Digital and helped reinforce us as a necessary destination for campaign coverage and political news.”
Based in Cleveland, Gomez joined NBC News from BuzzFeed News in Feb. 2021, for whom he covered Joe Biden‘s presidential campaign from the start, as well as Pete Buttigieg‘s campaign.
