NBC News announced some staffing updates on Friday.

Sarah Mimms, who joined the company in June from BuzzFeed News as a politics editor, is joining NBC News full time as deputy Washington editor, overseeing digital’s coverage of Congress and more in coordination with senior Washington editor Ginger Gibson. Mimms has managed NBC News digital reporting on Jan. 6 rioter cases while steering congressional coverage. Prior to BuzzFeed News, where she oversaw reporting on Congress and campaigns, Mimms was the managing editor of Countable, an app that explains pending legislation in Congress, as well as a political editor at Vice News and the lead Senate reporter for the National Journal.

Shannon Pettypiece, after more than four years as a Senior White House reporter — covering two administrations and tracking the government’s response to Covid-19 — has been named senior policy reporter. In this role, she’ll cover the intersection of economic policy and politics. Pettypiece previously covered health care and markets both for NBC News and in her previous role at Bloomberg.

Peter Nicholas, most recently a senior national politics reporter for NBC News contributing to the team’s midterms coverage, will take on the role of senior White House reporter, taking over for Pettypiece.

A well-traveler political journalist, Nicholas began as a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Washington Bureau, where he interviewed George W. Bush. He then covered Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign for the Los Angeles Times before moving to The Wall Street Journal, where he covered Obama’s 2012 re-election bid and then, Donald Trump’s 2016 race and administration. He most recently covered President Joe Biden for The Atlantic before joining NBC News nearly a year ago. In his new role, he will lead NBC News Digital’s coverage of the Biden administration.
