NBC News Announces 2012 Embed Reporters

By Merrill Knox

NBC News has named its team of eight embed reporters that will hit the road to cover the 2012 election, according to an internal memo from NBC News president Steve Capus sent out to staffers this morning.

The reporters, who have not yet been given specific assignments, will contribute to all of NBC’s news platforms, including on MSNBC and on the web. They were selected by a team that included NBC chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd and will report to a training “boot camp” on Monday.

The internal memo, including the full list of reporters, is after the jump.

Just a quick note so folks can join me in congratulating the talented young people who will soon hit the road as NBC News’ 2012 campaign embed reporters.  Coming from the ranks of our major shows and tough beats, these promising journalists are no strangers to breaking news, covering the biggest stories of the day, and maximizing our industry’s ever-evolving technology:

Carrie Dann, msnbc.com
Garrett Haake, NBC Nightly News
Jo Ling Kent, CNN Beijing bureau
Alexandra Moe, NBC 2010 Tim Russert Fellow
Jamie Novograd, Weekend Nightly News
Anthony Terrell, The Rachel Maddow Show
Shawna Thomas, NBC News Washington Bureau
Andrew Rafferty, Meet The Press

They have just been through a rigorous selection process, will begin a comprehensive training program next week, and will then jump on the campaign trail armed with the sharpest political savvy, most cutting-edge technology, and deepest network of support of any class yet.

These folks are going to become mainstays thanks to their constant reporting from the road — a crucial component to uncovering the truth and presenting the fairest facts about each candidate, and an advantageous complement to our top-notch correspondents. They will contribute daily across all of the platforms of NBC News — including our network newscasts, MSNBC, msnbc.com, and more. In the past, our embeds have been helpful and complimentary but this cycle it will be even more so — this class of embeds will play an essential role in the smart journalism that our television viewers, web readers, and app users trust and expect.

Many thanks to the team that selected these eight stand-outs from a very impressive pool of applicants — including our seasoned political director, Chuck Todd, and senior editor, Rob Rivas, who will now run the training boot camp. We are looking forward to another presidential cycle as America’s number one name in news.

Wish them well now and stay tuned for details about their assignments as well as the rest of NBC News’ first-class political coverage.

Steve
