MSNBC’s Chris Hayes on Baltimore, the Peabody Awards, and Jessica Jones

There’s been plenty written about MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and his show All In recently, but little has been of the share-it-on-Facebook-for-Mom variety.

In one recent profile, Hayes was described as “a dead host walking” as rumors swirled his show would be replaced.

And yet, over the last few months, Hayes and his show have done what no other MSNBC show has–produced the kind of reporting that receives television’s highest honors. All In won an Emmy last fall for Outstanding News Discussion and Analysis. And now, an All In special, “Back to Baltimore,” has been selected as a Peabody Award finalist.

“I’m tremendously proud of the All In team that worked very hard to put this show together,” Hayes told TVNewser. “(I’m) grateful to all the people in Baltimore that took the time to speak with us, (and) extremely honored that we are recognized by the Peabody Awards.”

In the special that aired last April, Hayes traveled to Baltimore to report on riots sparked by the death of Freddie Gray, but also the deep divisions in the community after decades of conflict between police, politicians and residents–and great economic inequality.

Hayes is proud of the work–but also to be a finalist alongside some of television’s most respected names. No, not Frontline and 60 Minutes. “Psyched to be in the same company as Master of None and Jessica Jones,” he said.
