Today is MSNBC’s 17th anniversary. The channel launched on July 15, 1996 with the goal of merging news and technology due in large part to the channels two owners at the time, Microsoft and NBC.
Now, of course, NBCUniversal owns 100% of the channel, and the focus is on politics.
MSNBC president Phil Griffin recognized the anniversary on Friday, with staffers getting lunch on the channel and an afternoon champagne toast (pictured left).
