MS/NBC: An Asset For NBC Universal

“Even if” MSNBC “makes $1 it’s considered a successful venture by NBC, which can use the channel to spread out the cost of running a 24-hour news operation,” Variety’s Michael Learmonth writes. “But some analysts wondered if NBC Universal will decide that the asset — a fully-distributed cable channel — would be more profitably used as a movie channel that would be an outlet for Universal’s film library.”

Some observers have floated the idea that CNBC and MSNBC’s operations could merge, possibly at CNBC’s new headquarters in Englewood Cliffs. MSNBC recently commenced a publicity campaign for its primetime programs, and it will be strengthening the weekends early in 2006. CNBC started revamping its daytime lineup earlier this month.
