Morning Show Ratings: Week of July 27 and July Sweeps

By Brian Flood

morning show anchors_640NBC’s Today show won the July sweep in the key A25-54 demo for the first time since 2012. Today edged ABC’s Good Morning America by only 1,000 viewers, but the NBC morning show will still celebrate its first sweep victory since February 2014. GMA finished first in total viewers, but Today closed the gap by 43 percent compared to July 2014. CBS This Morning finished third in both categories for the month of July.

The sweep demo numbers are so close that GMA finished tied with Today when using the Live + 7 metric. Typically, our Sunday show ratings are based on Live + Same Day, but ABC uses Live + 7 for sweeps, season and quarter averages. So, NBC claims a narrow victory… depending who you ask.

As for the week of July 27, GMA won both the demo and total viewers. Despite the victory, GMA is down -6 percent in viewers and -8 percent in the demo compared to the same week last year. Today was also down -4 percent in viewers and -5 percent in the demo, finishing second in both categories. CTM was the only morning program to show growth vs. a year ago, finishing up +13 percent in viewers and down -3 percent in the demo.
