Morning Show Ratings: Week of July 16; ‘GMA’ and ‘Today’ Tie in the Demo

By Chris Ariens

“Good Morning America” takes another week as the #1 morning show, topping “Today” by +353,000 Total Viewers, winning for the fourth straight week. But “GMA’s” nearly 17-year quest to win a week among the viewers that count — the A25-54 demo — is dashed again as “GMA” and “Today” come to an absolute tie, according to Nielsen, with each show drawing 1.737 million A25-54 viewers for the week. (If you read their press releases, each show is claiming victory. See after the jump).

“Today,” which began broadcasting from London this week ahead of the Summer Olympics, continues to struggle. Compared to the same week last year the show is down -12% in total viewers and down -20% in the younger demo. “GMA” is up +4% in total viewers and up +4% in younger viewers. “CBS This Morning” continues to show consistent growth: up +7% in total viewers and up +6% in younger viewers.

For the 2nd week in a row, “GMA” outdrew “Today” in Total Viewers all 5 days of last week. Monday: +586,000, Tuesday: +432,000, Wednesday: +297,000, Thursday: +455,000. On Friday, when news broke out of Colorado, GMA held the lead, though a smaller +5,000 edge over “Today.” Week-to-week, all three programs showed growth.
