Morning Show Ratings: Week of August 21

Different week, similar result. ABC’s Good Morning America was the No. 1 morning show in total viewers, while NBC’s Today held firm as No. 1 in the ad-friendly A25-54 demo.

Not only did GMA ranked No. 1 in total viewers this past week, it also delivered its largest total audience in 8 weeks. In addition, GMA is currently the No. 1 morning newscast in total viewers for the 5th consecutive year and is increasing its total viewer lead over Today versus last season by 29 percent.

On the downside, GMA was -5 percent in total viewers and -5 percent in the demo versus the comparable week in 2016.

Not only did Today win the week in the news demo, as is generally the case, but the program also won two days straight among total viewers, which is not generally the case. The program also managed to post its best weekly total viewer delivery in three months.

Today show’s win this past week in the key A25-54 demo also marks 87 straight at the top, and 103 of the past 104.

On the downside, Today posted a -9 percent decline in total viewers, and a whopping -16 decline in the news demo from the comparable week in 2016. To be fair, Today scored a post-Summer Olympics ratings bump that week last year.

CBS This Morning remains in third place. The newscast posted a -5 percent in total viewers, and a -13 percent among adults 25-54 from last year.

The numbers for the week of August 21, 2017:

  • Total Viewers: ABC:  4.041 M / NBC:  3.955 M / CBS:  3.250 M
  • A25-54 viewers: ABC:  1.303 M / NBC:  1.479 M / CBS:  877 k
