More Than 70 Staffers Laid Off Across NBC News and MSNBC

By A.J. Katz

NBC News and MSNBC laid off roughly 75 staffers yesterday, per multiple reports, out of a workforce of roughly 3,500. The staff cuts also were reportedly scattered across the NBCU News Group divisions. Behind the scenes employees, not on-air talent, are the ones being impacted by the cuts.

The double-digit staff layoffs come a day after NBCUniversal News Group announced a reorg of its broadcast news division, with its president Noah Oppenheim leaving NBC News and his duties now being split among three top executives — former New York Times deputy managing editor Rebecca Blumenstein joining NBC News in the new role of NBC News President, Editorial. Blumenstein, Today show chief Libby Leist and Janelle Rodriguez, who oversees Nightly News and the NBC News Now streaming service, will each report directly to NBCU News Group chairman Cesar Conde.
