Midterm Ratings: 35 Million Watch Election Coverage

By Alex Weprin

Just under 35 million people watched election coverage across eight Nielsen-rated channels from 9-11 PM ET, The Nielsen Company says. That is up from 2006, when 31.4 million people tuned into midterm coverage, as well as 2002, when 26.3 million people tuned in.

For 2010, Nielsen is including the Fox broadcast channel and Univision in its measurement. Neither one was included in 2006. The other networks in the measurement are NBC, ABC CBS, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC.

Not surprisingly, the ratings are a far cry from 2008, when Nielsen estimated that 71 million people tuned in to the election results.
