Media Descend on Havana for Obama Trip

By Chris Ariens

The cable news networks began coverage of President Obama’s historic trip to Cuba Sunday afternoon. President Obama is the first U.S. president to visit Cuba in 88 years. Crews from the broadcast and cable networks arrived late last week for coverage. But even as relations between the two nations become normalized, some TV news crews had their gear held at customs, meaning some live shots were delayed.

All the networks were in place as the first family arrived at Jose Marti airport in a driving rainstorm just after 4 p.m. ET.

The Obamas then went for a walking tour in Old Havana where ABC’s David Muir caught up with the president. “Change is going to happen and Raul Castro understands that,” Obama told Muir, who will be getting an exclusive sit-down interview with the president tomorrow. Meanwhile, Soledad O’Brien, whose mother was born in Cuba, will sit down tomorrow with First Lady Michelle Obama in a conversation with Cuban students.

Later Monday, O’Brien will moderate a panel with President Obama and Cuban entrepreneurs.
