May 2015 Ratings: CNN Up 55% Vs. Last Year

By Brian Flood

CNN was the No. 2 cable news network in total day viewers and the A25-54 demo for the month of May. Fox News Channel remains the clear-cut winner, but CNN showed the most growth and has now beaten MSNBC for 11 consecutive months in total day among both total viewers and the demo. CNN also had its best prime-time demo advantage over MSNBC in more than 7 years, since February 2008.

The ratings for May 2015:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 586,000 Total Viewers / 219,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 440,000 Total Viewers / 145,000K A25-54

Coverage of the rioting in Baltimore gave a boost to CNN’s monthly totals, which oddly enough featured the network’s highest- and lowest-rated weeks of 2015. CNN is up +56 percent in viewers and up +55 percent in the demo compared to May 2014, when the network fell to fourth in daytime. The strong performance vs. last year gives CNN the largest increase among the Top 35 cable networks.
