CNN Digital Worldwide has named Matt Wells its new executive editor for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In this new role, Wells will be responsible for coverage of the region across CNN’s global digital platforms, overseeing breaking news, features, and enterprise journalism.

Wells was previously the international director of global programming and alerting for CNN Digital Worldwide, overseeing digital output across all of CNN’s international digital platforms.

“Matt’s love of both breaking news and distinctive work makes him the ideal person to lead our terrific EMEA team and guide our urgent and essential journalism for our audiences around the world,” said CNN Digital Worldwide SVP of global news Rachel Smolkin.

Wells added, “I couldn’t be more excited to take on this brilliant role at CNN, leading a wonderful team that produces some of the best digital journalism in the business.

Based at CNN’s London headquarters, Wells steps into his new role immediately and will oversee a team of London-based journalists as well as journalists spread out across the region.

Wells’ appointment is the latest to come as a result of CNN’s newsgathering units being restructured under the guidance of Virginia Mosley, the EVP of editorial.

In September, Marcus Mabry was named the new senior VP of digital editorial and programming, and David Goldman was named the executive editor of CNN Business.

Wells will also be a part of CNN Digital Worldwide’s global digital news leadership team, including Smolkin, Allison Hoffman, Josh du Lac, Steve George, Goldman and Veronica Rocha.
