Matt Gutman’s Star Rises at ABC News

In the TV news business, major news events can define careers, but they also launch them. Anderson Cooper broke out as a star journalist at CNN during his coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

Now, with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, ABC News may have found a rising star of its own, ABC News Radio reporter Matt Gutman.

Gutman has been appearing regularly on the television network covering the spill from the Gulf coast.

“He’s very much in the mold of the reporter who is a true digital journalist – someone who can shoot and produce and edit,” said an ABC News insider.

Gutman has also drawn reactions from TV viewers, who seem to care less about his digital journalism skills than some of his other assets:

“He looks like he was ripped from the cover of Men’s Health or Muscle & Fitness,” wrote one blogger, adding: “Wooh, heat wave! I feel like Blanche from The Golden Girls whenever ABC drags him out of hiding.”
