Layoffs as Vice News Prepares for Nightly Newscast

Vice News has been hit with layoffs in the U.S. and U.K., with about 15 editorial employees being laid off. “All of UK editorial team, plus the only two foreign correspondents laid off just now (including me),” said Vice’s Harriet Salem on Twitter. “Massive US layoffs too.”

Politico reports the layoffs come as Josh Tyrangiel is being promoted to oversee the company’s entire news division, including the new nightly newscast set to debut this year on HBO. Tyrangiel was hired last October from Bloomberg.

In April, Vice added two network producers to the team working on the HBO newscast, Javier Guzman, senior producer for U.S. news, who arrived from Fusion, and Christina Vallice, a veteran of NBC News.

A week later, another longtime NBC Newser, Madeleine Haeringer, was named executive producer of the HBO program.
