Kentucky Derby Conclusion Interrupted In Georgia

By Marcus Vanderberg

Horse racing fans in Albany, Ga., tuned in to watch the Kentucky Derby were in for a rude awakening Saturday afternoon.

NBC affiliate WALB accidentally cut to a commercial in the middle of the race and control operators were unable to fix the problem in time.

“Saturday afternoon’s broadcast of the Kentucky Derby on WALB was interrupted unintentionally by a commercial break,” the station said in a statement. “Before our operators could correct the error, our viewers missed the end of the derby.”

According to WALB manager Jim Wilcox, the station recently installed new switching equipment, which caused the error.
