Kalb on Kurtz: Reality Show Review

By Chris Ariens

FishbowlDC has a write-up on The Washington Post review of Howard Kurtz‘ book Reality Show: Inside the Last Great Television News War. The book was reviewed by network news veteran Marvin Kalb.

“…a 464-page, sound-bite-by-sound-bite report on ABC’s Charles Gibson, CBS’s Katie Couric and NBC’s Brian Williams during a time of political crisis at home and war in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a fascinating, richly detailed story — little of it new, however, if you have read Kurtz’s newspaper reports. But if you haven’t read them, I suspect you will benefit greatly from this tale of three remarkable reporters, who have the capacity every evening to influence 25 million viewers who still watch their presentation of the news.

FBDC also reports that during his weekly online chat yesterday (by the way, how many hours are in Howard Kurtz‘ day?, does the guy sleep?) someone asked “are [The Washington Post] book review editors just very careful whom they ask to review the books by Post employees?”

Kurtz: “The reviews are assigned to independent critics who can say whatever they want, and I did not know until I picked up [Sunday’s] paper who was reviewing Reality Show.
