July Ratings: CNN Returns to #2 in Primetime

By Chris Ariens

CNN’s coverage of the death of Michael Jackson was enough to put the channel back in second place in the cable news race.

CNN had its best July ever in primetime in both Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo. CNN topped MSNBC in primetime (M-F) by 57% in the demo and by 48% in Total Viewers. The monthly win comes after MSNBC beat CNN in weekday primetime for the second quarter.

“Larry King Live,” which produced the most Jackson coverage on CNN, grew 54% among Total Viewers and 69% among A25-54 viewers compared to July ’08.
