It’s less than two, and out for Josh Elliott at NBC Sports. Elliott is leaving the network 20 months after joining.
THR, which first reported the news, says Elliott could be headed to Fox Sports, which is heavily investing in sports rights deals and talent for cable channel FS1.
“Josh and NBC Sports mutually decided to part ways, and we wish him the best of luck in the future,” NBC said in a statement.
Elliott joined NBC in April 2014 after bolting from ABC’s Good Morning America. At the time, Elliott said it was a desire to return to his broadcasting roots in sports. In 2011, ABC plucked Elliott from ESPN and added him to GMA. A year later, the longtime No. 2 morning show topped NBC’s Today show for the first time in 16 years.
At NBC, Elliott worked on some projects for the news division, appearing on the Today show in Oct. 2014, and taking part in a Dateline series in February. But Elliott said his move to NBC was really about fulfilling a lifelong goal. “A profound and essential part of my being has always been to be a part of an Olympics broadcast,” Elliott said when he joined NBC.
And it would have happened in a few months, and for years to come, if he’d remained with the network. NBC has the U.S. broadcast rights to the games until 2032.
If Elliott does join Fox Sports it could mean a relocation to Los Angeles where it is based. Over the summer, Elliott wed New York local TV news anchor Liz Cho.
