It’s not exactly a secret that Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, co-hosts of the MSNBC morning program Morning Joe, have been “frustrated” with Donald Trump‘s rhetoric as of late, and have been more than willing to state their dissatisfaction with the GOP nominee on-air. Trump has noticed, even calling the show “unwatchable” recently in a series of harsh tweets directed at the Morning Joe co-hosts, particularly Brzezinski.
Trump has also become known for bestowing nicknames upon his opponents. Scarborough decided to flip the script, taking a page out of The Donald’s playbook this morning by calling him “Amnesty Don,” a name which refers to what he feels is Trump’s changing stance on immigration over the past week or so. The GOP nominee has made immigration a focus of his campaign, and previously expressed support for a force to deport the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country. Yet he mentioned last week that he would be open to a “softening” of the immigration laws.
“Think about this, for 14 months, Amnesty Don, and a lot of people are calling him Amnesty Don. People are saying it, they’re calling him Amnesty Don. Amnesty Don, that’s what people are calling him… I’m not calling him that, Amnesty Don. Hashtag #AmnestyDon,” Scarborough said. He went on to call Trump by the new, “unique” nickname several times during the rest of the show.
The “Amnesty Don” rant became a social media sensation, with #AmnestyDon cementing its status as the No.1 trending topic on Twitter for a good portion of the morning.
