Jim Lehrer on What’s “Never Going To Change” at The NewsHour

When The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer re-launches tomorrow as the PBS NewsHour, anchor Jim Lehrer wants viewers to know that the program’s core journalistic values will remain the same.

“I promise you one thing is never going to change,” Lehrer said at the close of Friday’s broadcast, “and that’s our mission. People often ask me if there are guidelines in our practice of what I like to call ‘MacNeil-Lehrer Journalism.’ Yes, there are.”

Lehrer then proceeded to read from his Rules of Journalism, which include:

• Cover, write and present every story with the care I would want if the story were about me
• Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories and clearly label it as such
• I am not in the entertainment business
