Jay Barbree reporting for NBC News in the early 60’s
Today Jay Barbree marks his 57th anniversary covering the space program for NBC.
This morning on MSNBC he told Jose Diaz-Balart, “57 years ago today I did my first report for NBC News and I’ve been with them ever since.”
Barbree, 81, is the only journalist who has covered all of the USA’s manned space missions and many robotic missions as well. He has reported from Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center on all the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo missions as well as the Space Shuttle program for NBC News, NBC Radio News and MSNBC.
Barbreee is also an accomplished author. He has written or co-authored several books, including “Moon Shot” and “Live From Cape Canaveral.” Barbree also wrote “Pilot Error”, which was an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man. In 1987 Barbree survived a near-fatal heart attack which he wrote about in his book “The Day I Died.”
Today is also the 46th anniversary of the first manned Moon landing. Buzz Aldrin, who piloted the lunar module, tweets:
