NBC News’ Amy Robach and CNBC’s Sharon Epperson moderated a panel on the need for parents to talk to their kids about financial responsibility, sponsored by iVillage and PASS from American ExpressSM.

The event, held at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan on Tuesday, outlined the need to keep the conversation of money going with your children. Less than one in five teens (19%) are saving for college, which is why The Talk initiative is holding this program.

Less Than 1 in 5 Teens (19%) Are Saving For College – Underscoring The Need For Parents To Connect With Their Teen Children About Financial Responsibility*

iVillage and PASS from American ExpressSM Continue to Spread the Word About The Importance of Having The Talk With a Panel Discussion at the MOMA, Moderated by NBC News’ Amy Robach and CNBC’s Sharon Epperson

WHAT: iVillage, the essential digital brand for women, in partnership with PASS from American Express, a prepaid reloadable card parents give to teens and young adults, will host a financial discussion for New York-area women this evening, Tuesday, November 16, at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan.   The event is themed around The Talk initiative, an innovative program from iVillage and PASS from American Express, designed to spark conversation among women while delivering the tools and resources they need to teach themselves and their teens the importance of financial responsibility.

The panel will include teenagers and young adults from the Tri-State area and will be moderated by both NBC News’ Amy Robach and CNBC’s Sharon Epperson along with youthologist and author, Vanessa Van Petten.  The discussion will provide guidance and solutions for mothers who are seeking ways to better connect with their teens on this subject.

According to a nationwide study released by iVillage earlier this year, close to half (41%) of moms wish they knew more about managing money so that they could better inform their teens about being financially responsible.

*In an iVillage poll fielded just last week, 79% of online women with teenaged children reported that their kids primarily spend their allowance money on themselves; with video games, personal care products, clothes, movies and candy at the top of their kids’ lists.  Regrettably, the women polled indicated that less than 1 in 5 (19%) of their teens are actively saving for college with their allowance money.
