‘It’s Devastating’: Verdict Delayed in Al Jazeera Journalist’s Trial

Al Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy expected to hear the verdict in his long-awaited retrial on terror charges in Cairo Thursday morning, only to find the court had delayed its decision. “We showed up to the court on time and the doors were not even open,” Fahmy told Canada’s CTV in an interview from Egypt. “It’s devastating for all of us,” he said.

Fahmy, a Canadian, has been fighting terrorism charges since December 2013, when he was arrested along with two Al Jazeera colleagues for allegedly aiding the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt accused Fahmy and his colleagues of being part of a terrorist group and spreading falsified footage intended to damage national security.

CTV reports the verdict in his case has been postponed until August, stretching his court case into its 19th month. “What can I say? The court system in Egypt has proven many times that it’s not efficient,” Fahmy said.
