It’s a Wrap: Canada’s Sun News Network Shuts Down

By Brian Flood

Canada’s Sun News Network has abruptly shut down at 5amET on Friday, leaving employees stunned. The network did not announce the shutdown on air, simply fading to black and eventually airing a still shot of the Sun TV logo.

The network was dubbed “Fox News North” by liberals, because of its conservative views, launched in 2011. Employees reportedly learned their fate online or by watching rival networks, as no notice was given to certain employees.

President and CEO of Sun Media Corp. issued the following statement:

The closure is regrettable for the Canadian broadcasting system, which is losing a distinctively Canadian voice in the national news space, and also, most importantly, for all the Sun News employees who are losing their jobs.

The network had been hoping to find a buyer but they were apparently unsuccessful.
