“In The Coming Weeks, ABC News Will Announce Further Interim Plans For Substitution” On WNT

By Brian

ABC began to establish a timetable for future anchoring of World News Tonight today. The network said:

Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson will continue to fill in for [Bob] Woodruff until the end of February as he recovers. When the timetable for Woodruff’s recovery becomes clearer in the coming weeks, ABC News will announce further interim plans for substitution on the broadcast.”

Who will sub for Woodruff after February?

> On Wednesday, a board certified trauma nurse wrote this to TVNewser: “Woodruff is heavily sedated because he has severe brain swelling, and they probably have not replaced the chunk of his skull that was removed immediately after the injury to allow the brain to swell, unimpeded by the hard bone of the skuil — otherwise, the pressure from the swelling in the closed space inside the skull would have killed him. He’ll be lucky to be able to walk and talk after this. ABC needs a permanent back-up plan.” Update: 3:25pm: It’s important to note that this e-mailer doesn’t have any information besides what has been reported by the media…

> Update: 3:34pm: The AP reports: “After Woodruff’s injury, both Gibson and his “GMA” co-host Diane Sawyer have filled in, and will continue to do so ‘for the next few weeks,’ said ABC News spokeswoman Cathie Levine. ‘When we have more information about Bob’s recovery, we’ll put a plan in place to take us forward.’

Referring to any maternity leave Vargas might take, Levine added, ‘We’ll factor that in, as well.'”
