“Mainstream media have remained relatively silent” about Don Imus‘ comment, the NYT’s David Carr writes. “He is, after all, popular, good at his job and, perhaps more important, he generously provides oxygen — and an audience — to the kind of journalistic and political elites who would be expected to demand his head on a pike.”
Carr says MSNBC’s apology “is a little like saying that they did not manufacture a bomb, they only delivered it.” He adds: “Part of the reason that his corporate owners are eager to apologize, eager for the latest gaffe to blow over, is so that they can get back to counting the lucre he generates…”
