Hurricane Irene Sets Sights on the Bahamas

By Chris Ariens

With the 5pmET update, Hurricane Irene has weakened a bit to a Category 1 hurricane. But it’s expected to restrengthen into a Cat 3 storm by Thursday over the Bahamas as it moves north, skirting Florida and heading up the east coast. Last year, the Bahamas’ only broadcaster, state-owned ZNS restructured, and downsized, letting go 80 employees. 19 years ago today, Hurricane Andrew hit the Bahamas. Andrew would go on to strike South Florida and — until Katrina in 2005 — was the costliest and one of the strongest storms to ever hit the U.S.

TV networks and local stations in the Carolinas and Virginia that are today covering the earthquake will soon turn their full attention to Irene.
