How Stephanie Ruhle Went From Finance to TV News

By A.J. Katz

MSNBC anchor and NBC News correspondent Stephanie Ruhle was once told by a mentor that moving from investment banking to TV news was a bad idea.

“The financial crisis happened, and that was an opportunity for me to figure out what I wanted to do for a living,” Ruhle said in a “spotlight” interview for NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly.

“I was involved in an organization called the White House project, and the woman who ran it introduced me to Bloomberg. I told them: ‘You can pay me zero dollars, but I need you to give me a TV show to anchor, and I need you to hire someone to teach me where the cameras are.’ They actually said, ‘yes,’ and that was six years ago!”

On whether or not there are too many news media outlets:

“It’s not that there are too many news media outlets, it’s trying to figure out what we call them and what do we categorize as news? The danger lies in what becomes news. And I will tell you what makes me angry. People are telling me it’s politics these days that makes me angry, but it’s not. It’s decency. People are so angry with one another, and we have lost the ability to give one another the benefit of the doubt.”
