How CNN’s Sanjay Gupta Juggles Being a Neurosurgeon and Media Personality

By Alex Weprin

The Wall Street Journal interviews CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta about his new book, Monday Mornings. Aside from the book, he Journal asks Gupta how he can possibly juggle his CNN duties, his writing and the TNT pilot based on the book with, you know, his obligations as a working neurosurgeon.

It varies. I split my time half-and-half between medicine and media. Monday, for example, I’m in the operating room. Thursday, I see patients in the office. Friday, I’m in the operating room. It’s a two-and-a-half, three-day week dedicated to the hospital. The rest of the time, I work on the projects in the media — documentaries, pieces on upcoming things, writing for the website. It just varies day-to-day. I did a lot of the book writing, for example, on the weekends, at night, and on planes. So, there is no set protocol.
