How Al Jazeera America Reported Its Own Demise

By Mark Joyella

Al Jazeera America spent 14 minutes on international news–and the Powerball drawing–before reporting the network’s own news–that it would be shutting down later this year.

“Al Jazeera America will be ceasing its operations by April 30th this year,” said Tony Harris on the network’s 7 p.m. ET newscast, reading a statement from AJAM chief executive officer Al Anstey and relating some of the honors the network has earned since its launch in August 2013.

The story ran even later in the 8 p.m. ET newscast anchored by John Seigenthaler. At 8:19, Seigenthaler repeated Harris’ script word for word, and moved on.
